PM Modi Assures Full Central Support for Flood-Ravaged Assam
Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to assess the severe flood situation in the state, assuring complete support from the Central government for relief and rehabilitation efforts. Continuous rainfall has inundated large areas, impacting over 5.35 lakh people across more than 20 districts and claiming 11 lives due to floods and landslides. Sarma briefed the PM on the ongoing relief operations undertaken by the state government.
Unpacked:
Cachar district is among the worst affected in Assam, with over one lakh people displaced. Other heavily impacted areas include Sribhumi, with around 85,000 people affected, and Nagaon, with 62,000 affected, as flooding continues to disrupt life across more than 20 districts.
Relief operations include rescue missions, distribution of food and medical supplies, and the setup of relief camps for displaced people. The state government leads these efforts, with support and assurances from the central government for additional resources and rehabilitation support.
The India Meteorological Department predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations in Assam, with moderate rainfall expected across most parts of the state. The forecast suggests the flood situation may worsen if the rain continues.
Public transport, including road, rail, and ferry services, has been severely disrupted due to the heavy rains and flooding. This has hampered both daily activities and the delivery of relief materials to affected areas.
