Google Plans Strategic AI Data Centre on Australia's Christmas Island

Google is planning to build a major artificial intelligence data centre on Australia's remote Christmas Island, located south of Indonesia. The facility is seen as a critical strategic asset for monitoring naval activity in the Indian Ocean, particularly from China. The project, which follows a cloud deal between Google and Australia's Department of Defence, would enhance AI-enabled command and control capabilities. A subsea cable will connect the island to Darwin, which hosts a significant US Marine presence.
