Justice Surya Kant Recommended as Next Chief Justice of India

Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai has formally recommended Justice Surya Kant, the senior-most judge after him, as his successor. Following convention, the recommendation was sent to the Union Law Ministry. Justice Kant is expected to become the 53rd CJI on November 24, following CJI Gavai's retirement. Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019, Justice Kant will have a tenure of nearly 15 months. He has been part of benches that delivered landmark verdicts on Article 370, sedition law, and electoral transparency.
