Government Launches ₹36,000 Crore in Bihar Development Projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a series of development projects in Bihar worth approximately ₹36,000 crore. The initiatives, unveiled in Purnea, include the foundation stone for a massive ₹25,000 crore thermal power plant in Bhagalpur, new rail lines to improve connectivity in the northeastern part of the state, and a new terminal building at Purnea airport. These projects aim to significantly boost Bihar's infrastructure, energy production, and transportation networks, fostering regional economic growth.
Unpacked:
The 3x800 MW thermal power plant in Bhagalpur is Bihar’s largest private sector investment, valued at ₹25,000 crore. It uses ultra-super critical, low-emission technology, significantly boosting Bihar’s energy production and security, and is expected to support the state’s growing electricity needs and economic development.
The new rail lines and the upgraded Purnea airport terminal will improve connectivity, making travel and transportation of goods faster and more reliable. This is expected to facilitate trade, enhance regional integration, and create more economic opportunities for the northeastern districts of Bihar.
Bihar is seeing record investment in roads, bridges, and railways, including projects like the Greenfield Patna–Arrah–Sasaram Corridor, new Ganga bridges, expanded highway networks, and modernized railway tracks and stations, aiming to transform the state into a key logistics hub in eastern India.
Challenges could include land acquisition delays, funding bottlenecks, bureaucratic hurdles, environmental concerns, and ensuring timely completion. Effective coordination between state agencies, private investors, and local communities will be crucial for the successful execution of these large-scale infrastructure projects.
