Andhra Pradesh Launches 'Stree Shakti' Scheme for Free Bus Travel for Women
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has launched the 'Stree Shakti' scheme, fulfilling a key election promise of free bus travel for women. The scheme allows all women, girls, and transgender persons with state domicile to travel for free on 74% of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) fleet, including Pallevelugu and Express services. The government estimates that around 2.62 crore people will benefit from the policy, which aims to empower women and reduce their transportation costs.
Unpacked:
The scheme includes Pallevelugu, Ultra Pallevelugu, City Ordinary, Metro Express, and Express buses, covering 74% of the APSRTC fleet. It excludes non-stop interstate services, higher-priced Ultra Deluxe and Super Luxury buses, contract carriage, chartered services, and package tours.
The scheme is expected to cost the state government approximately ₹1,942 crore annually, which translates to about ₹162 crore per month.
Officials have been directed to prepare a comprehensive plan for auto drivers by linking existing state and central government schemes to minimize negative impacts, aiming to support livelihoods affected by reduced demand for private transport.
The scheme aims to enhance women’s empowerment by improving access to education, employment, and mobility, boosting economic independence and dignity, and significantly reducing transportation costs for women, girls, and transgender individuals statewide.
