Two Soldiers Killed as Anti-Terror Operation in Kulgam Enters Ninth Day
Two Army soldiers, L/Nk Pritpal Singh and Sep Harminder Singh, were killed in an overnight gunfight with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district. The encounter, one of the longest in recent times, has now entered its ninth day. Two other soldiers were also injured, bringing the total number of injured security personnel in the operation to nine. Security forces have killed two terrorists since the operation began on August 1 and continue to use drones, helicopters, and para commandos to track down remaining militants.
Unpacked:
Kulgam district in South Kashmir has become a focal point for counterterror operations due to increased militant activity, difficult terrain, and reports of the presence of well-trained foreign terrorists. Security forces have launched multiple operations here recently, including the ongoing multi-day encounter, making it one of the most active conflict zones in the region.
Police sources indicate the group includes at least five terrorists, with three reportedly being foreign nationals trained in jungle warfare. Many such militants in Kashmir are linked to Pakistan-based groups or seek to unite the region with Pakistan or as an independent territory, reflecting the long-standing conflict over Kashmir.
The encounter has lasted over nine days due to the challenging terrain of the Akhal forested area, the militants' training in jungle warfare, and their use of thick cover. Security forces are proceeding cautiously and using advanced technology like drones and helicopters to minimize casualties and locate militants.
This operation follows a series of heightened security activities after the 2025 India–Pakistan conflict and recent terror attacks, such as the Pahalgam massacre. Security forces have increased operations in South Kashmir, targeting both local and foreign militants, reflecting ongoing tensions and efforts to curb insurgency in the region.
